"They've created an amazing business and at the same time they're trapped." That is how Rajesh Nagjee describes the gilded cage: a successful company whose founder cannot say what is bothering him, because people might find out he is not as successful as he appears.
On The Leader's Mindset, Rajesh joins host Jason LeDuc to talk about the inner game behind team leadership. He describes his work as business physics. They cover the inner game equation, what happens when growth targets outrun the leader, why delegating tasks turns a leadership team into vendors, and how to help people without giving advice.

What is the gilded cage? The gilded cage is nothing but what people have walked into. They've created an amazing business, and at the same time, they're trapped in all the inner game and all the inauthenticities. Rajesh links it to the loneliness at the top: a leader who cannot share what is bothering him because people might find out he is not as successful as he appears.
What is the inner game of leadership? Performance is equal to potential minus interference. And everybody has potential, but what takes away from performance or reduces it is the interference. Rajesh's work goes into the interference: the fear, doubt, and pretending that slow a leader down.
Why does delegating tasks fail? When you delegate projects and tasks, what are you doing? You're actually converting your leadership team into vendors. His alternative: "For ownership to show up, you got to delegate outcomes and you got to give them agency."
